Alex Mirutziu in comprehensive survey of queer art publication

Added on by Alex Mirutziu.

“In the work of Romanian artist Alex Mirutziu the self portrait expresses his view of social reality in all kinds of symbolic ways. In Self-portrait at 32 (2014) two video screens show footage of abandoned buildings covered with vegetation. The artist regards this work as a metaphor for homosexuality in his country and had dedicated it to outcasts. His work reflects his love-hate relationship with his country of origin, but this is provocative when one considers that in his opinion history "has been muscled up and hijacked for generations until it became a monster, especially in post-revolutionary Romania. Art is therefore a protest for Mirutziu.”

Gradina Imposibila

Desenul se transforma in gravuri. Video si fotografia sint produse finale pentru sculptura. Conventiile istorice se concentreaza tot pe sculptura.

Acelasi sistem generativ este prezent in mod direct chiar si alaturi de artisti. Alex Mirutiu face o grupare cu el insusi TAH– 29 / The Artist and Himself at 29 /, Dan Beudean are in procesul de lucru un cloud implicit. Lucrurile sint puse in opozitie.

Forma esentiala ascunde lumea vizibila. Arta nu imita natura. Arta supravegheaza natura. Cu tranchilitate si eleganta.

Jecza Gallery has the great pleasure of inviting you to the opening of the exhibition "The Impossible Garden", curated by Liviana Dan, bringing together in a shifting exhibition project contemporary visual artists Dan Beudean, Alex Mirutziu and The Artist and Himself at 29.

Opening night: Friday, the 23th of June, at 7 PM at Jecza Gallery - Calea Martirilor 1989 51/52-53, Timisoara, Romania.

The exhibition will be open from the 23th of June until the 5th of October 2017.

”The Impossible Garden has the meaning of a reconstruction with a contemporary becoming. Classicism with an organic capital, for some - a turquoise sky, for others - a gospel. To avoid sterility, we use elements of the past, poetic elements, romantic elements. Evaluating positively, it speaks of a cool morning, of light and of an elegant line... The dramatic architecture becomes prominent from the beginning. The drawing, video and photography become performative passages. The drawing turns into engravings. Video and photography are the final products for sculpture.

Historical conventions also focus on sculpture. Reinterpretation uses preparatory or preliminary steps. Unattainable and radically vulnerable. The Impossible Garden becomes an island of art.” (Extract of curatorial concept by curator Liviana Dan)

Dan Beudean was born in 1980 in Cluj-Napoca. He studied art at the University of Art and Design in Cluj. Today,  Dan Beudean lives and works in Cluj-Napoca and is considered one of the best artists dedicated to drawing of his generation. Apart from his interest for drawing, Beudean has recently made a series of installations, sculptures and video works. Dan Beudean's creation has a visionary dimension and, like a medieval artist, he is preoccupied with nature, mysticism and symbolism. His interest, however, draws towards the historical dimension  of the 21st century and its socio-political issues. Beudean's drawings capture even the smallest details, regardless of the format chosen, focusing on the physical and spiritual destiny of the contemporary man. Dan Beudean is a critical but subtle observer of the man's attempt to dominate nature in his attempts to acquire it artificially. He admires, however, the perpetual explorational effort that underlies contemporary society.

The Artist and Himself at 29 (TAH29) is a trans-historical genome and a hyper-object that operates and co-activates humor and the retroactive irony as ways of addressing the place of change and action at the present time. Alex Mirutziu is part of this collective, with himself, the artist, at the age of 29. TAH29 is defined by a museological activity, as the artist who is the most inalienable when he replaces or enacting someone else, an observation that John Keats has fully assumed when he hacked his existence in a letter wrote to Richard Woodhouse. TAH29 breathes the phenomenology of the present and is left to gravitate by the notion of philosopher Graham Harman - a reality without presence.

Alex Mirutziu is an artist who, by means of  performance, installation or text, is preoccupied with the way in which space is reoriented after finality has been reached. He uses design to bureaucratically manipulate and adapt personal and historical events with a philosophical arrest escorted by honesty. He created a collective - TAH29, with a hyper-object, more precisely with himself at the age of 29, and often activates in this structure. At present, his preoccupations for the symbiotic relationship between man and nature brings him closer, in a postmodern manner, to Romanticism. Beyond his artistic activity, Mirutziu is also interested in theoretical practices, collaborating with different artists, writers, musicians, designers, foreign philosophers or prestigious institutions. In the exhibitory context of the subject matter, Drummer in Cosmos will create an eclectic musical set, resonating deeply with the theme proposed by the curator and implicitly with the works of Dan Beudean, Alex Mirutziu and The Artist and Himself at 29. Throughout his 20 year musical career, Drummer in Cosmos succeeded in perfecting his understanding and performance of his music genre of choice: techno. Its sets are inspired by the intergalactic sounds, the interlace of their frequency spectrum and the oscillation of artificially generated nature sounds. Sharpened with subtle valences of pitched down techno, the magic of his music succeeds in giving the audience a transcendental experience.

Galeria Jecza are deosebita plăcere de a vă invita la vernisajul expoziției ”Grădina imposibilă”, curatoriată de Liviana Dan, care îi alătură într-un proiect expozițional inedit, pe artiștii Dan Beudean, Alex Mirutziu și The Artist and Himself at 29.

Vineri | 23 iunie | ora 19:00 | Galeria Jecza / Calea Martirilor 51/52-53

Art Encounters - 1st edition kicks off

Added on by Alex Mirutziu.

3–31 October 2015

www.artencounters.ro

Curators: Nathalie Hoyos and Rainald Schumacher

First edition of the Timisoara Art Encounters, to become a regular venue for Romanian art in the international curatorial dialogue.

In October 2015, Timisoara, the city in western Romania in the heart of the historic Banat region and among the Romanian cities in the current competition for European Capital of Culture 2021, will host the first Timisoara Art Encounters. Stretching over the historical center of the city, Timisoara Art Encounters offers multilayered displays at diverse sites that invite visitors to share in the sensual and intellectual experience of contemporary art. It appeals to people of all ages, to visitors both local and international.

This year’s curatorial theme is Appearance and Essence, and with it Timisoara Art Encounters focuses on a not so well-known chapter in the history of European art: the story of Romanian art from the 1960s to the present day. The selected works trace the distinct narrative thread of Romanian art that emerged and evolved in parallel to art in Western Europe. For the first time, visitors have the chance to experience a comprehensive survey of Romanian art of the last 50 years in dialogue with a few international artists.

Participating artists include: Saâdane Afif, Dragos Alexandrescu, Silvia Amancei & Bogdan Armanu, Apparatus 22, Rosa Barba, Marius Bercea, Stefan Bertalan, Matei Bejenaru, Rudolf Bone, Mihut Boscu Kafchin, Geta Bratescu, the Bureau of Melodramatic Research, Andrei Cadere, Mircea Cantor, Marieta Chirulescu, Radu Comsa, Calin Dan, Daniel Djamo, Joakim Eskildsen, Constantin Flondor, Adrian Ghenie, Ion Grigorescu, Mihai Iepure Gorski, Sofia Hultén, Pravdoliub Ivanov, Gabriel Kelemen, Maxim Liulca, Ana Lupas, Dan Maciuca, Alex Mirutziu, Florin Mitroi, Anca Munteanu Rimnic, Ciprian Muresan, Vlad Nanca, Paul Neagu, Ioana Nemes, Tara von Neudorf, Alexandru Niculescu, Mihai Olos, Andrei Pandele, Dan Perjovschi/Balamuc, Lia Perjovschi, Veda Popovici, Stefan Sava, Serban Savu, Sigma, sub:real, Gert and Uwe Tobias, Iulia Toma, Gabriela Vanga, to name but a few.

Nathalie Hoyos and Rainald Schumacher, the two Berlin-based curators, take Romanian art as the starting point for their selection. “We will concentrate the Encounters on artists who have a relationship with Romanian culture and whose art is rooted in its history, be it by place of birth, by language or by some underlying artistic references; artists who live in the country or abroad. As outsiders, we have taken an ‘archeological’ look at the Romanian art scene and have tried to capture its essence. After identifying the uniquely Romanian quality of this art, we bring it to the surface and make it clear to see. Appearance & Essence is the curatorial theme for this edition of Timi?oara Art Encounters. We are not looking to pin down a specific ‘national’ identity, and are instead searching for certain cultural differences and individual nuances in the global discourse.”

Timisoara Art Encounters takes place across the entire historical city center. A thematic map will connect exhibitions in institutions, public galleries, the Timisoara Art Museum, a former high school and several abandoned buildings. Numerous artistic interventions will be staged in public places. A series of talks featuring international artists, curators and art historians will intensify the open dialogue with the public and the city at large. The educational program developed for Timisoara Art Encounters is aimed at all ages and communicates a concept of art as an open space, where different ideas, opinions and concepts about the world can meet and interact.

Detailed information on the exhibition sites, educational program and participating artists will be announced on the website. A complete overview will be released by the end of May. Further information available at www.artentcounters.ro.

Timisoara
Timisoara lies at a historic crossroads between the former Ottoman and Habsburg empires, in the center of Banat, a Southern-European region rich in diverse traditions. Over several centuries, the city has been a melting pot for various cultures and religions. Furthermore, in the 1960s and 1970s, the city was an important and vibrant creative center for Romanian contemporary art. In that period, artists from Group 111 or the Sigma Group publicized new artistic concepts which drew international attention. In December 1989, the revolution against the Ceausescu dictatorship started in Timisoara. In the 1990s, the city offered a stage for a series of influential festivals, which gave artists the opportunity to test their newly-won liberty. Timi?oara Art Encounters reflects the historical and cultural legacy of the city.

Curators
In 2014, curators Nathalie Hoyos and Rainald Schumacher developed a film and video program for Manifesta 10 in St. Petersburg. The curators’ selection was the first major survey of film and video art by contemporary artists, working both in the East and West, from the 1960s until today. The exhibition Fragile Sense of Hope, which they curated in 2014 at me Collectors Room in Berlin, featured highlights from a corporate art collection focusing on contemporary art from Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
