Valentina Iancu - on pioneers of Romanian queer art

ALEX MIRUTZIU – BOTTOMS KNOW IT, 2019

Valentina Iancu's writing about Alex Mirutziu's art is in a league of its own. From the publication Revista ARTA comes this thoughtful piece about the LGBTQ+ art scene in Romania.

“Ion Grigorescu’s unintentional queer touches were an inspiration for the young artist Alex Mirutziu (b. 1981), one of the first artists in Romania to consciously use a queer vocabulary. In his artworks, Mirutziu explicitly articulates his homosexual subjectivity, exploring his own desire, love, fear, pulsation and compulsion. Mirutziu centers his work on the body, often using his body to return the gaze, while making subtle sense of a “sinful and pathological” desire. Alex Mirutziu finished his visual art studies in Cluj-Napoca in 2001, the same year that homosexuality was decriminalized. He is a multidisciplinary artist working with performance, video art, theoretical texts, poetry, and drawing. His politics are oriented toward personal poetics, queerness being implicit, often abstract. Mirutziu makes use of metaphor to form an abstract queer vocabulary, understanding his art as “a protest”. Mirutziu only began including video art in his practice in 2017, extending some performances in new video art works. He doesn’t consider the documentation of a performance a work of art. Similarly, a video-documentation of a painting may not be seen as a new piece of art. His video performances ”Dignity to the Unsaid”, ”The Gaze is a Prolapse Dressed in Big Business” (2018) and ”Bottoms Know It” (2019) have performances as a starting point but end up as unique video artworks often incorporating new scenarios. Mirutziu builds his subjects rhizomatically, carefully connecting ideas so as not to fall into categorical thinking. His work investigates queer issues, mixing theoretical approaches with intuition. For example, ”Bottoms Know It” aims to give access to a distinct type of knowledge, that of the complicated relationship we have with our assholes. Centered on the poetics of anality, hence of openings, entrances, closings, exits, centers, and holes it deploys means of seeing and understanding the world and the ‘other’ taking disappearance and debasing of the self as the subject and gateway to a more profound grasp of our humanity.”

In the performance/video, three local performers (dancers) are put into situations of visual alienation. Conversing and debating about the limitations of the body, they engage in an absurdist philosophical dialogue. Anal poetics is a way of queering a penis-oriented masculinity. Anal pleasure is seen as a pathological pleasure and as a feminizing pleasure. It is hence often refused by heterosexual males out of fear of homosexuality, largely being associated with gay sexuality.”

The text was first published by East European Film Bulletin.

Valentina Iancu scrie just despre arta lui Alex Mirutziu.

Performance-urile sale video ”Dignity to the Unsaid”, ”The Gaze is a Prolapse Dressed in Big Business” (2018) și ”Bottoms Know It” (2019) pornesc de la performance-uri, însă ajung să fie opere unice de artă video, incluzând adesea scenarii noi.

TRIUMF AMIRIA. The Museum of Queer Culture [?], in partnership with the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC Bucharest), present the first exhibition in the series You Feel ~ And Drift ~ And Sing (1- 245), which includes over 100 artworks and series produced by 38 artists/artistx and collectives and is one of the visible results, in exhibition format, of research on queer artistic practices in Romania, in the 20 years since an important moment in the recent political history: the decriminalisation of same-sex relationships with the repeal of Article 200 of the Criminal Code in 2001.

In the good fluid spirit of TRIUMF AMIRIA, the curatorial duo KILOBASE BUCHAREST - comprised of Dragoș Olea (also curator of the Triumf Amiria visual arts section) and Sandra Demetrescu, co-curator of the exhibition and chief curator of MNAC Bucharest, - have selected artworks produced by artists who identify as queer, works that address queer themes or that were made in a critical key, or with the intention of setting processes of change in motion.

The exhibition can be decoded in numerous ways:

*) a multidimensional puzzle in which some 245 queer narrative scenes coexist and float in dialogue in which love, empathy and critical spirit are raised to hyperbolic power

*) an absolutely necessary ~ fragile ~ precious forum in constant reformulation in which the boundaries between the public (agora) and the private space melt and are successively reiterated due to the works and to an adventurous ~ magical ~ surprising exhibition architecture created with the architect Laura Paraschiv / CIRCA 1703 -3071

*) an expected ~ unexpected ~ immersive non-linear retrospective of two decades of queer artistic production, in which themes were not imposed by a pre-formed grid, but rose to the surface progressively, following in-depth research and discussions with artists.

*) a celebration without festivities in which you are invited to feel ~ drift ~ sing through a vast repertoire of queer artistic expressions about identity, desire, trauma, ecology, ritual and healing, the future in its most progressive forms, difference, stigma, racism, the contemporary art system, reclaiming public space, dismantling oppressive definitions and norms, language and the neologisms of an expanded vocabulary, fluidity, generosity.

The process of documentation and production has been intense - accelerated ~ complex ~ exciting, but also exhausting at times. The curators had to consult, read and process countless portfolios, websites, cultural media press materials, videos and online interviews with artists, as well as conversations with them. Several student volunteers from the Center for Excellence in the Study of the Image (CESI) participated in the exploration of the media landscape that reported on queer practices over the two decades included in the research.

"The coalescence of an exhibition or, more accurately, a set of exhibitions into an «in-between» state - fluid, myriad-narrative and sprawling, like YOU FEEL ~ AND DRIFT ~ AND SING - involved working in depth with several artistic communities, being guided at every step by several questions: who are, or should be, the invited artists given that the initial budget included 30 artistic positions? How can we present a generous, nuanced and surprising spectrum of work on queer subjects and queering/queer artistic processes in the exhibition? How can we maintain a constructive balance between voices that have consistently contributed to queer discourses in Romania, as well as internationally, in the two decades covered by the research, as well as emerging voices, among numerous gender expressions, etc", explain the members of Kilobase Bucharest.

TRIUMF AMIRIA. The Museum of Queer Culture [?] is a recuperation project of queer cultural production from the last 20 years focusing on three directions: literature, visual arts and performing arts, carried out by the MozaiQ Association in partnership with the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Replika Educational Theatre Centre and the artist Kjertsi Vetterstad (Norway). Throughout 2021, the project proposes a series of events aimed at highlighting the importance of queer culture over the last decades, as well as encouraging new cultural production through exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, theatre performances, public readings and networking events.

The Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) presents “Gaining in a State of Debt”, the first solo exhibition by Romanian artist Alex Mirutziu (1981, Sibiu, Romania. Lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Romania).

Mirutziu’s practice extends over a wide range of media and activities, including sculpture, drawing, poetry, and performance, as well as critical and curatorial projects. In his work, which is both highly intellectual and deeply physical, he expands the notions of approximation and proximity in connection to time, presenting “dislocated modes of arrival at meaning.” In his modus operandi, he seeks to facilitate the understanding of the body as a “turbulent performative occasion” – drawing on the poetics of homelessness and invisibility. Through his artworks, he looks at ways of suspending the set-ups of doing and un-doing, thinking and un-thinking. Alongside TAH29 (The Artist Himself at 29), he acts within a collective body whose modus operandi is “retroactive irony.”

His exhibition at CCA Tel Aviv features a new performative work, entitled Bottoms Know It, and a compilation of videos that contextualize the new work and at the same time open up new avenues of understanding. Conceived for CCA Tel Aviv and featuring three performers and three props, Bottoms Know It exposes what may come across as being implicit but unnoticed, which is not necessarily a feature of truth-making.

Through the combination of different streams of thoughts and informed by philosophical concepts that are always personalized and freely interpreted, the artist is capable of creating time-based and durational experiences between himself and the viewer, using the artwork – whether in the form of an object or a body (his own or somebody else’s) – as a channel, a catalyst, a sort of remote controller that is linking two individuals, himself and the viewer, possibly located in two different geographical and time zones. However, all the aforementioned notions never come as we usually expect them: “time-based” should be considered according to an unusual notion of time; “durational” should be perceived according to a larger scope of perception. The work of Alex Mirutziu not only makes us think, it also makes us think about the conditions allowing us to think, and un-think, to do, and un-do.

Manufacturing Nature / Naturalizing The Synthetic

Artists: Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan, Nona Inescu, Olivia Mihălțianu, Alex Mirutziu, Vlad Nancă

Curator: Diana Marincu

Residence: September - November, 2018

Exhibition: 17 November, 2018 - 27 January, 2019

The XXXIInd International Workshops of the Frac of the Pays de la Loire are taking place this year as part of the France-Romania 2019 year. Frac invited Diana Marincu to design this new two-month residence with six Romanian artists.

Manufacturing nature / Naturalizing the synthetic” discusses new paradigms in understanding nature and culture, body and technology, politics and landscape. The exhibition and research residency tackles these issues through the works of the invited artists Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan, Nona Inescu, Olivia Mihălțianu, Alex Mirutziu, and Vlad Nancă.

“You walk for days among trees and among stones. Rarely does the eye light on a thing, and then only when it has recognized that thing as the sign of another thing: a print· in the sand indicates the tiger’s passage; a marsh announces a vein of water; the hibiscus flower, the end of winter. All the rest is silent and interchangeable; trees and stones are only what they are.” (Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities)

Italo Calvino’s “poetic of erasure”, as his understanding of Utopia has been called, functions as a perceptive mechanism – a construction of non-realities that can become accessible for the visitor only through projection, representation and erasure. This experience solidifies one’s mental representation of the city – the invisible one – instead of the existing visible context – the real one. The interplay between a need for understanding and, at the same time, a tendency of refusing reality creates a greater absence of the actual reference, escaping more and more. “The eye does not see things but images of things that mean other things”, so that in the end the signs of reality become part of an active agency – the city itself – while its own discourse seems stronger than any “truth”: “the city says everything you must think, makes you repeat her discourse”.

This excursion in the narrative strategies and method of representation employed by Italo Calvino opens up a larger territory, which reflects an ethical shift on how we perceive the strata of reality surrounding us – objects, beings, landscapes, etc. Do we listen to their voice? Are we ready to follow their codes and immerse into their stories? How do they perceive us? How do we affect them?

The Frac des Pays de la Loire is in several respects a pioneering organization : since 1984 it has been offering periods of residence to artists as part of the Ateliers Internationaux ; International Workshops programme. The works produced during these residencies have helped to enrich the collection in original ways. This is also the first Frac in France to have been endowed with a building specifically designed for its various functions and tasks, i.e. producing artworks and exhibitions, creating and curating a collection, and getting this collection to circulate within the region, so as to familiarize the public with today’s art. It’s brief was—and is—to put together an international collection, organize exhibitions and shows in the region, and raise public awareness about today’s art, thus getting people to take part in the development, circulation, distribution, and knowledge of contemporary art.

With more than 1,600 works, plus the important gina pane collection, the collection of the Frac des Pays de la Loire has been put together since 1982, in compliance with an acquisitions policy encouraging the purchase of works by young artists. The Frac has thus done its utmost to focus on the most innovative aspects of presentday art. In tandem with the follow-up given to the emerging generation of artists, the Frac also purchases historical works.
